Chapter 7

A fter spending some time embracing on the mattress, they huddled around the hearth wrapped in wool blankets, sipping on wine they drank from hollowed-out horns and clay goblets as they shared smiles. These days, they were intoxicated more by one another’s affections than the alcoholic content of anything they imbibed.

Soon, however, their conversation turned back to matters of importance. “What was it you wanted to share with us, Audelia?” the high priestess asked.

“I’m impressed you remembered,” Audelia chuckled as she took another swig of wine. “It’s just that I had an idea.”

“Well, don’t keep us guessing,” Kaya whined. She was still naked, laying backside-up across a fur rug. “What is it?”

“It’s about our Grint problem.” The smiles all soured to solemn expressions. Audelia sighed, fully aware that she’d just murdered the mood. “And it also pertains to the fate of my people.”

Isandra nodded. “Go on, then. What do you have in mind?”

Audelia placed her hands gingerly on her lap. Her shoulders dropped as she dismissed her tension. She could trust her companions.

“You may have heard of the Zer-Kali,” she said. “In recent years we have become a somewhat common sight in centers of civilization like Turik, Sulkeia, and Yarnesh, but there are those of us who’ve traveled as far as Imathia and Mezteca. The reason we have become so scattered is because our homeland is dying. In a way, it’s already dead.”

Billy frowned. A surge of guilt twisted like a corkscrew in his gut as he realized he’d rarely pressed to learn more about her home—perhaps a side-effect of him actively avoiding talking about his own. On a few occasions, it came up, but she was always evasive, and he hadn’t been curious enough to press. He suddenly hated himself a bit for that.

Audelia continued. “We were once known as a barbarian tribe of the near east. We flourished for centuries, and our reputation was growing as skilled warriors and craftspeople even when I was young, but our homelands were based south of the Jagged Peaks to the northeast of Sulkeia. Isandra will know what this means.”

“Yes,” she confirmed. “The jagged peaks separate lands claimed be humanity from the Titan’s Graveyard.”

Kaya shuddered. “What’s that? Sounds creepy.”

“It is what it sounds like,” Audelia said. “And far worse. People in walled towns like this one whisper of its curse, but none of them know what it means. The curse doesn’t bring death—it is death.” She shivered as memories raced through her mind. “And it’s spreading. It spread into our lands, and one day it will likely consume the world.”

Isandra nervously clutched her blanket at her shoulders, but her face bore signs of skepticism—a raised eyebrow, her head cocked at a certain angle. “This is all very fascinating, but—”

“Everyone thought the peaks contained it,” Audelia continued. “But they don’t. Not anymore. Since I was a teenager, the curse came down from the mountains, spreading miles each year. Two years ago, when I left my home for the first time to find
